NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks held modest gains Wednesday after the Federal Reserve's Beige Book found mixed or decelerating conditions in five of 12 districts in August. The major indexes had pared their climb just before the Fed released its report. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was lately up 30.80 points at 10,371.49. The S&P 500 rose 5.12 points to 1,096.96. The Nasdaq Comopsite climbed 15.27 points to 2,224.16.
